At first, the colours and the complexes of transition metal chemistry can seem to be a mess of random information. So much to learn!
As scientists, you will be used to looking for patterns in sets of data, and this is no different!
What initally appears to be a mess can be organised into predictable patterns.. but don't forget the anomalies!
Here's a simple step-process to get your head around complex colours and reactions:

Study the poster to find patterns.
- Colours
- Complex ion formulae
- Charges on ions
- Changes which occur
Study the patterns to find anomalies
- Make a separate note of all anomalies
- Try to group anomalies together
Study the changes in formulae (reactions) and categorise by reaction type
- Acid-base reactions where a proton is lost or gained
- Ligand substitution reactions (also called ligand exchange) where there’s a straight swap
- Redox reactions where the central metal ion changes oxidation state
Use repetition to memorise mechanically
- Flash cards (making your own is best, but if you prefer an internet resource this one is good)
- Quick quizzes
Finally, use exam questions
- SME, PMT
